Ever spotted a hummingbird hanging upside down and thought something was wrong? Don’t worry - it’s completely normal! ![]()

Hummingbirds enter a special state of sleep called torpor to survive cool nights and conserve energy. ![]()

During torpor: ![]()
• Their heart rate and breathing slow dramatically ![]()
• Their body temperature drops ![]()
• They may perch or hang upside down, appearing motionless![]()

This deep rest helps them save the energy they need to fuel their incredibly fast wings and high metabolism once the sun comes up. ☀️ ![]()

So if you see a hummingbird looking “frozen” or upside down early in the morning or at night, it’s likely just resting and recharging - nature’s tiny powerhouse at work! ![]()

We recommend using frost cloth (available at our nursery!) or brown paper bags tied over the tips of your cacti.![]()
Brown paper bags are a great option because they:![]()
• Absorb heat during the day![]()
• Are breathable![]()
• Provide a protective barrier from frost at night![]()

🚫 What NOT to Do:![]()
Please avoid covering your plants with plastic, unless you plan to remove it during the day. Plastic can trap moisture and suffocate your plant if left on too long.![]()
